If you made it to Brazil and loved it so much that you want to stay longer (I sure did), I’ll explain how you can extend your 90-day stay. This step-by-step guide applies to you if you’re in São Paulo, so if you’re in a different city the locations will be different.

What you need:

  • You passport
  • A copy of your passport — first page and the page with the visa stamp
  • A copy of your credit card or some bank statement to prove you can afford to live in Brasil. I just made a copy of the front of my credit card (weird, I know)
  • A flight ticket out of Brazil. You can make just a reservation and pay later.
  • A filled visa extension form: download here
  • Payment of visa fee. First, you need to fill this online form, print it, and go to any bank and pay.

In Unidade Arrecadadora, select SP (0272) Superintendencia Regional No Estado De Sao Paulo.

In Codigo Receita STN fill: 140090 and select the first one (0094)

There is a Banco do Brasil and a Caixa in the Police section but they only take their local cards, not international ones. They also have 4 ATMs that don’t work (at least for me), so if you plan to pay it there, take cash with you.

Now, with all of the above, you go to this address: Rua Hugo D’ Antola, 95 — Lapa, 05038–090 São Paulo SP.

There should be a big line of people outside, just ignore that and tell the policeman that you want to extend your visa (extensão de visto) and you go in. They’ll take a photo of you when you enter the building, then go to the 3rd floor to the left, (or 2nd floor to the right if you need to pay the fee), hand over your documents, wait 10 minutes and get your passport with the visa extension.

You’re welcome!

Later update: I found out that some countries can’t extend their visa due to the agreements between their country and Brazil. I could not find reliable information online on the exact list of countries, but my friend with a Czech passport was not able to extend it. My friends with UK and Canada passports were able to extend tho. My passport is from Romania, I could also extend my stay.

Don’t worry tho, there is a way around it! The police told my friend to come one day after his visa expired, pay a fine for overstaying (about 100BRL per day + 100 BRL deposit) then he has 60 days to leave Brazil without any fine. His last day was on a Friday so he could only go to the police on Monday, where he paid about 400BRL in total and got a 60 days extension.

Either way, by extending your visa or by overstaying, you “theoretically” are not allowed to re-enter Brazil for 6 months, but from what I’ve heard from other people they don’t really check nor care, especially if you come from a developed county.

Later Update 2: I found a list of countries here: apparently the Schengen countries can’t extend. USA, Canada, and most countries can. If your country is marked with the number 8 without a *, you should be able to extend your stay.

Good luck and write in the comments below how this went for you. I will update this article when I come back.
